Introduction

Prem Singh Basnyat, PhD

Global peace and security scientist and military historian (PhD), with 26 years of professional experience from the peace and security field, including 15 years in academic research, teaching, training, human resources development, security management and administration.

Basnyat’s research profile comprises studies of DDR, SSR, global conflicts and conflict resolution and the relevance of international humanitarian law, the other UN Charters, environmental hazards, civil-military relations and macro-economic management for security strategies and the conduct of military operations. He has written on civil-military relations in the context of Nepal’s decade-long conflict. Basnyat is also a leading historian on Nepal’s military history, including the early modern Nepalese state’s security strategy, war strategy and domestic resource mobilization for military purposes (the Anglo-Nepal war, Nepal- China-Tibet war, analysis of the strategic, cultural and economic functions of forts) and for post-conflict recovery and development. Basnyat has comprehensive visiting lecturing from 1995 to present days. He is a visiting fellow and the Global DDR Team member of Centre for Peace Studies, University of Tromsø, Norway .

As a United Nations Peace Keeper, Basnyat has served in Lebanon, Croatia, Haiti and Nepal . Based on his practitioner experiences, Basnyat has contributed with security analysis of UN’s deployment provisions, conflict resolution, confidence building matters, Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR), Security Sector Reform (SSR), Inter-Agency Cooperation (between the UN’s military components, UNHCR, Red Cross, INGOs, UNPOL, local communities, including IDPs, refugee settlement and the media) .

Basnyat has a varied senior management experience over more than 25 years, as Research Officer he has served as Museum Curator and Founder and of Nepal’s first Military Museum and Research Center. He has held several military line-positions, as adjutant officer, security and intelligence officer, training officer, recruiting officer, company commander, battalion commander, deputy brigade commander and UN assistnant Humanitarian/ Security officer in Lebanon, UN Military Observer in Croatia and UN Military Operation Center Chief and National Contingent Commander in Haiti. Mr Basnyat has also done a DDR-course at Tromsø University, Norway and United States of America too. He has been doing DDR-research (as Visiting Scholar) at the same university. In addition he has carried out many DDR-related jobs in Haiti and prepared reports based on the trainings. He also has done Disaster Management course, Defence in Democracy course and curator course in the UK and Army Command and Staff College course in Nepal. Mr. Basnyat is the Colonel of the Nepalese army (2010) and the British Chevening Scholar.
